All of Final Fantasy Takes Place on the Exact Same Planet!

Before you read this through I will add a disclaimer that I don’t have any control over the official story of the Final Fantasy series, so this really just amounts to elaborate fan fiction and some really desperate attempts to link together games that are similar but can’t likely be related.

With this guide, I will attempt to show how all the Final Fantasies are on the same planet. This will explain:

1. Why topography of the planet is different between games even if they are on the same planet.

2. Why the Gysahl greens are called such even though there is no town called Gysahl in most games.

3. Why multiple different towns called Mysidia were built.

4. How Cid in each game is in fact the same person.

5. Why crystals are so important to the series.

6. Why the character classes are largely consistent through each game.

How will I do this? Time Travel!!!!  Read on after the jump!

I also ask you to be familiar with the following theory on time travel:

http://www.examiner.com/article/temporal-theory-101-nbsp-what-is-a-sawtooth-snap-or-cycling-causality

Courtesy Mark Joseph Young

A breif breif breif explanation:

In the AB segment time flows straight until point B where someone travels into the past.

Arriving at point C (which corresponds to A in the original timeline) the new timeline writes over the old one until one of 3 things happens:

N-Jump: Time is changed, but conditions are such that the time traveler’s temporal duplicate goes back in time to make exactly those changes, so time progresses.

Infinity Loop: Time is changed in ways that prevent the temporal duplicate from traveling back in time to make said changes, meaning they never happen, which mean he’s not prevented from going back to make them, which means he makes them, which means he is prevented.. etc etc etc. Time is broken.

Sawtooth Snap: The time traveler makes changes that don’t prevent his temporal other’s trip, but because of this, different changes are made when that temporal other goes back. These changes still don’t prevent the temporal duplicate from going back, but these changes are also different, etc etc etc, until the sawtooth terminates in an N-jump (where the exact set of changes are made twice in a row) or an an infinity loop (where eventually changes are undone and redone forever and ever)

(Edit: I have only included in this guide Final Fantasies I-VI. It got to be so much work that I decided I’ll stop inventing ways to cause another sawtooth so VII to whatever they’re on now can be included. This is just to demonstrate that it can be done, and also it should be quite obvious from the guide that I am most familiar with Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy IV, and I don’t feel like doing loads of research to brush up on the plots from 8 onward.. because I stopped playing after 7. In my opinion 1-6 were the best and the series took an odd turn at 7 that was still fun, but I had no interest in 8 or any of the games after. It has come to my attention that in 8 time travel plays a role, as does it in 10, 11, 13. There are plenty of further ways to explain the whole thing that I frankly don’t have time to research….so just enjoy this one that links I-VI)

This guide will use the abbreviations BFF (before Final Fantasy) and ABF (after Final Fantasy)

In the original timeline:

A-B Segment

Point A: Creation of the universe

-Unknown: Earth and the solar system is created

-Eons ago – The Creator (of FFIV: The After Years) visits the planet between Mars and Jupiter and leaves a lot of crystals.

-Destruction of Phaeton: The planet between Mars and Jupiter explodes creating an asteroid belt.

The very very distant future: The Earth is polluted beyond repair and space exploration has not revealed any feasible alternative world for humans to live on. But a scientist (we’ll call him Bob) has a plan to travel back in time to the very distant past to explore the theorized planet Phaeton (Point B).

C-D Segment

Point C: The very distant past: Bob explores Phaeton, and determines it would be okay to settle on. He travels forward to the very very distant future, sometime after he jumped backward. He’s also very careful not to disturb anything so as to alter the timeline drastically.

Between point C and D everything happens as before in the A-B Segment

The very very distant future: Bob convinces his friends and family to travel in his time machine spaceship to Phaeton in the very distant past. Point D

E-F Segment

Point E: The very distant past: Bob’s family and friends arrive on Phaeton, and vow never to visit Earth. This is passed down from generation to generation and accurate historical records are kept so that everyone knows not to mess with Earth, lest they damage the timeline and jeopardize their very existence. They also discover the Creator’s crystals and technology advances at an astonishing rate on Phaeton.

The time before Destruction of Phaeton: A group of scientists led by FuSoYa invent a way to solve the pollution problem on Earth. It involves four crystalline orbs as a means to control the elements. There are now so many millions of people living on Phaeton that they also want to save… They however haven’t figured out a way to travel forward in time with everyone, so the decision is made to create a giant moon sized spaceship and set it in Earth’s orbit, then put Phaeton’s population in cryosleep until after Bob makes his trip back in time. They will then reveal themselves to the doomed Earth, solve all their problems and humanity will live in paradise. They become the Lunarians

-Destruction of Phaeton: Phaeton explodes.

-2001 BFF – Garland the Lunarian awakens from cryosleep and devises a plan to make himself ruler of Earth and all humanity. He travels to Earth with the four orbs. He uses floaters (or levistones) to build himself a temple and inside he builds the four fiends.

The activation of the orbs triggers FuSoYa to wake up, and he in turn wakes up his top warrior Kluya, and his top scientist Cid to go stop Garland, and prevent further damage to the timeline, because it might result in an infinite loop, which is what they want to avoid at all costs. They travel to Earth aboard the Lunar Whale, which they hide in the ocean (The Lunar Whale is also carrying the 8 crystals of FFIV).

Once in the temple, Kluya and Cid determine that time travel is somehow part of Garland’s plan, and in the ensuing battle, Garland, Cid and Kluya are all transported forward to different points in time. The fiends remain trapped in the temple and can’t get out, so they eventually die of old age.

-420 BFF: Cid and the 4 orbs end up in Lefein. Cid’s mission now is to figure out time travel and prevent Garland from ever leaving the moon. He doesn’t worry about any changes he makes to the timeline because he’s going to set it right. Over the next 20 years he figures out how to travel forward but not backward and ultimately fails to make any headway. With the future tech from Cid, Lefein builds airships, robots and the Sky Castle over the next 20 years.  Cid dies of old age. Lefein continues on its technological path and becomes the dominant power on Earth.

-5 BFF: Garland arrives near Coneria. He finds his temple in ruins. He needs the resources of the temple to travel back in time to stop Cid and Kluya from ruining his plans. He has figured out how to travel into the past, but only one short jump. Over the next 5 years he finds a secluded spot and studies world events carefully.

Present Day: Garland travels backward in time to 5 BFF (Point F)

G-H Segment

Point G: 5 BFF: Garland B arrives from point F and over the next 5 years gains favor with the King of Coneria due to his keen ability to predict future events and by promising that he will make Coneria as powerful and advanced as Lefein. He is keen enough not to make contact with Garland A, who also is keen enough to steer clear of Garland B and just observe. With the resources of the kingdom at his disposal Garland B figures out a way to travel to what he thinks is a point before Kluya and Cid tried to stop him 2001 years in the past. For some reason it involves the sacrifice of Princess Sara of Corneria.

0 BFF: Garland A travels backward in time to 5 years ago. Garland B kidnaps Princess Sara and performs a time travel ritual forgets to carry the 1 in his calculations and travels back 2000 years into the past (Point H).

I-J Segment

Point I: 2000 BFF: Garland B arrives and realizes his mistake. He enters the temple and plans to simply use the power of the fiends to make a short jump backwards. Once inside he meets the 4 fiends, but lacks the crystal orbs with which to control them. Instead, he makes a deal with them, promising them control of the Earth in exchange for them sending him to 2001 BFF (Secretly he thinks they don’t realize that if he is sent to 2001 BFF he can get the orbs, stop Cid and Kluya, and control the fiends.)  They agree and Garland uses their power to send them forward in time. Garland is trapped in the temple and dies.

-420 BFF: Cid and the 4 orbs end up in Lefein. Cid’s mission now is to figure out time travel and prevent Garland from ever leaving the moon. He doesn’t worry about any changes he makes to the timeline because he’s going to set it right. . Over the next 20 years he figures out how to travel forward but not backward and ultimately fails to make any headway. With the future tech from Cid, Lefein builds airships, robots and the Sky Castle.

-400 BFF: Tiamat arrives from 2000 years ago and takes control of the Sky Castle, forcing the Lefeinish to return to Earth. Cid reveals everything and sends the Sky Warriors of Lefein to the ruined temple so they can attempt to stop Tiamat 2000 years ago. They get turned into bats.

Realizing that this problem could have serious consequences and ramifications for the space-time continuum Cid decides he needs to take the orbs back to the moon and figure out what’s going on. The problem is, Cid has no way to go back to the moon as he has not yet developed a way to locate the Lunar Whale, as it isn’t in the same place it was when he and Kluya parked it in the Ocean 1601 years ago. Instead he will teleport to the moon. Unbeknownst to him though, his teleportation calculations are not exact and he is actually transported to the moon in 10,000 AFF.

-200 BFF: Kraken arrives and sinks the Sea Shrine. Lich, then Kary arrive as well and take up root in the Earth Cave and the Volcano. Over the next 200 years they are thought of as monsters of legend, as nobody alive has actually seen them.

-5 BFF: Garland A arrives fresh off his battle with Kluya and Cid near Coneria. He finds his temple in ruins. He needs the resources of the temple to travel back in time to stop Cid and Kluya from ruining his plans. He has figured out how to travel into the past, but only in one short jump. Over the next 5 years he finds a secluded spot and studies world events carefully. Garland B arrives 5 years in the Future and over the next 5 years gains favor with the King of Coneria due to his keen ability to predict future events and by promising that he will make Coneria as powerful and advanced as Lefein once was. He is keen enough not to make contact with Garland A, who also is keen enough to steer clear of Garland B and just observe. With the resources of the kingdom at his disposal Garland B figures out a way to travel to what he thinks is a point before Kluya and Cid tried to stop him in 2001 BFF. For some reason it involves the sacrifice of Princess Sara of Coneria.

-0 BFF: Garland A travels backward in time to 5 BFF. Garland B kidnaps princess Sara and begins his time travel ritual which gains the attention of the fiends. They decide to ignore Garland’s deal because they figure he wanted to go back to a time when he could control them with the orbs. They figure he will make the same miscalculation and the same deal with them to free them. They are right. Garland B travels back to 2000 BFF.

-200 AFF: The Apocalypse! The Fiends Destroy all civilization on Earth. For the next 1000 years, the 4 Fiends run rampant, changing the topography of the Earth to how it looks in Final Fantasy 2. They eventually die of old age. Some humans survive this dark era and must pick up the pieces from the stone age. The Mysidian Order of Lefeinish mages manages to survive the apocalypse and establish a town, which they name Mysidia. Eventually Lefein is forgotten.

-Sometime before 5000 AFF: One person is successful in domesticating the Chocobo, but it is very difficult and the knowledge does not spread.

-Sometime after 5000 AFF: Kluya arrives in a location on Earth without any land and drowns to death. The events of Final Fantasy II occur without Cid.

-10,000 years AFF: Cid arrives on the moon to find it in ruins, along with all the Lunarians dead. Apparently the apocalypse has caused gravitational anomalies that altered the moon’s orbit. Cid studies what has happened to Earth through the moon’s databanks and devises a plan to use Lunarian technology to travel back to 400 BFF shortly after he traveled forward find a group of volunteer Lefenish warriors, and send them to 0 BFF to stop Garland B. He travels back to 400 BFF (Point J).

K-L Segment

Point K 400 BFF: Cid arrives shortly after he left, and rounds up the light warriors. He tells the Lefenish that they will travel to 400 years in the future and save the world (This becomes the prophecy).

Tiamat becomes aware of what’s going on and attacks Cid and the light warriors to prevent them from stopping his freedom. They quickly make the jump into the future but in the mess of it all, Cid mistakenly transports himself to 5000 AFF, and the light warriors to the moon in 10,000 AFF. Over the next 400 years the prophecy is handed down from generation to generation and changed and distorted and some don’t even believe it is real. Garland A and B are both aware of the prophecy but think of it as an old wives tale.

0 BFF: The prophecy goes unfulfilled. Everything else in the timeline is identical to the rest of the I-J segment until 5000 AFF.

-5000 AFF Cid arrives from 400 BFF near the Kingdom of Finn and becomes a Knight.

-Some time after 5000 AFF: Kluya arrives in a location on Earth without any land and drowns to death. The events of Final Fantasy 2 happen and Cid dies.

-10000 AFF The light warriors arrive on the moon shortly after Cid went to 400 BFF to go get them.  They decide to continue with their mission by reviewing Cid’s notes for traveling to 400 BFF and calculating how to go to 0 BFF. But they realize that they can only send one person at a time and not all 4. Not to worry though, shortly after the first goes, the second will, then the third, then the 4th. They decide on what job of 6 they will take for their quest (This is FF1’s character select screen in the beginning. And just for the purposes of this story we’ll say we have a fighter, a black belt, a red mage, and a white mage) To travel in time, each warrior needs to hold an orb and step on a portal. The fighter travels backward to 0 BFF (Point L).

M-N Segment

Point M 0 BFF Garland Kidnaps Princess Sarah and starts his time travel ritual in the Temple of Fiends. The Fighter arrives south of Coneria from 10000 AFF. He doesn’t know who he is and is holding a strange orb. Traveling north to Coneria everyone notices his orb and think’s he’s the prophecy come true, but something’s a little off, because there’s supposed to be 4, not one. Regardless, the King tells him that Princess Sarah has been kidnapped.  Being the nice guy that he is, he decides to go save her, nearly killing Garland.

Meanwhile the 4 Fiends notice that Garland’s time travel ritual failed, and decide to use their combined powers to save his life, and send him back to 2000 BFF so that he can make the deal with them and send them forward.

The Fighter continues along on his lone quest. He defeats Lich, but since he has the air orb, he can’t light it on the Earth Altar and warp out of there. A Cocktrice turns him to stone as he retraces his steps.

200 AFF: The Apocalypse! The Fiends destroy all civilization on Earth. For the next 1000 years, the 3 Fiends run rampant, changing the topography of the Earth to how it looks in Final Fantasy 3. They eventually die of old age. Some humans survive this dark era and must pick up the pieces from the stone age. The Mysidian Order of Lefeinish mages manages to survive the apocalypse and establish a town, which they name Mysidia. Eventually Lefein is forgotten except for bits and pieces of stories.

-1500 AFF: A farmer discovers some ancient seeds in a box buried on his farm. The box bears the name Gysahl (A Lefeinish farmer long since forgotten). The seeds grow into veggies, which the farmer names Gysahl Greens. He becomes so successful that an entire town springs up around his farm and they name the town after the plant. Over time people begin to believe that the plant is named after the town, not the other way around. Chocobos seem to like the plants very much and this leads to their wholesale domestication.

The town of Mysidia is destroyed and the mages scatter across the globe. They continue to carry on their traditions, but eventually the name Mysidia is forgotten.

-5000 AFF Cid arrives from 400 BFF. The backstory of Final Fantasy III occurs.

-Some time after 5000 AFF Kluya arrives in a location on Earth without any land and drowns to death. The events of Final Fantasy III occur

The fighter travels backward to 0 BFF Then the Blackbelt does (Point N).

O-P Segment

Point O – 0BFF Garland Kidnaps Princess Sarah and starts his time travel ritual in the Temple of Fiends. The Blackbelt arrives south of Coneria from 10000 AFF moments after the fighter did. They both don’t know who they are and are both holding a strange orb. Traveling north to Coneria everyone notices their orbs and think’s they’re the prophecy come true, but something’s a little off, because there’s supposed to be 4, not 2. Regardless, the King tells them that Princess Sarah has been kidnapped.  Being the nice guys that they are, they decide to go save her, nearly killing Garland.

Meanwhile the 4 Fiends notice that Garland’s time travel ritual failed, and decide to use their combined powers to save his life, and send him back to 2000 BFF so that he can make the deal with them and send them forward.

The 2 continue along on their quest. They defeat Lich, and luckily the Blackbelt has the Earth orb, so the Earth Altar works. They continue on their quest and defeat Kary in the volcano in a very difficult battle, and they are both near death.  The fighter’s air orb doesn’t work on the Fire Altar, so they can’t warp out of there. They try to retrace their steps and perish on the lava floor.

200 AFF: The Apocalypse! The Fiends destroy all civilization on Earth. For the next 1000 years, the 2 Fiends run rampant, changing the topography of the Earth to how it looks in Final Fantasy V.

-2000 AFF The town of Gysahl is destroyed. But since the greens are so essential to chocobo farmers, the name of the vegetable lives on, but nobody knows why they are called that.

-5000 AFF Cid arrives from 400 BFF Near Karnak. The backstory of Final Fantasy V occurs.

-Some time after 5000 AFF: Kluya arrives in a location on Earth without any land and drowns to death. The events of Final Fantasy V occur

The fighter travels backward to 0 BFF. Then the Blackbelt does. Then the White Mage Does (Point P).

Q-R Segment

Point Q – 0BFF Garland Kidnaps Princess Sarah and starts his time travel ritual in the Temple of Fiends. The White Mage arrives south of Coneria from 10000 AFF moments after the black belt and fighter did. All three don’t know who they are and are each holding a strange orb. Traveling north to Coneria everyone notices their orbs and think’s they’re the prophecy come true, but something’s a little off, because there’s supposed to be 4, not 3.

The 3 continue along on their quest. They defeat Lich, and luckily the Blackbelt has the Earth orb, so the Earth Altar works. They defeat Kary and luckily the White Mage has the Fire Orb so the Fire Altar works. They continue on to the Sea Shrine and nearly die defeating Kraken. The fighter’s air orb doesn’t work on the Water Altar, so they can’t warp out of there. They try to retrace their steps and are paralyzed and killed by Ghosts.

200 AFF: The Apocalypse! Tiamat destroys all civilization on Earth. For the next 1000 years, Tiamat runs rampant, changing the topography of the Earth to how it looks in Final Fantasy VI. Tiamat eventually dies of old age.

-2000 AFF The town of Gysahl is destroyed. But since the greens are so essential to chocobo farmers, the name of the vegetable lives on, but nobody knows why they are called that.

-Sometime before 5000 AFF – someone discovers how to use coal as an energy source and this kicks off an industrial revolution, ending the medieval era.

-5000 AFF Cid arrives from 400 BFF near the Gestahlian Empire. The backstory of Final Fantasy VI occurs.

-Some time after 5000 AFF: Kluya arrives in a location on Earth without any land and drowns to death. the events of Final Fantasy V occur

The fighter travels backward to 0 BFF. Then the Blackbelt does. Then the White Mage does. Then the Black Mage does. (Point R).

Segment S-T

Point S – 0BFF Garland Kidnaps Princess Sarah and starts his time travel ritual in the Temple of Fiends. The Black Mage arrives south of Coneria from 10000 AFF moments after the White Mage Black Belt and Fighter did. All four don’t know who they are and are each holding a strange orb. (The events of Final Fantasy occur… see below)

Traveling north to Coneria everyone notices their orbs and think’s they’re the prophecy come true, The King tells them that Princess Sarah has been kidnapped.

The 4 continue along on their quest. They defeat Lich, Kary, Kraken and Tiamat, then travel into the past through the Temple of Fiends. (Point T).

U-V Segment

Point U – 2000 BFF The 4 light warriors arrive in the past and defeat the 4 fiends again. Garland uses the power of the fiends to be transformed into Chaos. He too is defeated and the light warriors regain their memories. They understand that they risk creating a time loop if their 0 BFF counterparts don’t come into the past to defeat Garland. They also understand that without Lefein suddenly becoming technologically superior, they will never have embarked on this quest, which would cause a time-loop. But luckily they were all born in Lefein about a year before Cid’s initial arrival so their existence is assured if they don’t mess with the timeline too much.  They notice that with the orbs lit, they have the ability to look through them to communicate with other orbs bearers in other times, meaning Garland of 2001 BFF, Cid of 420 BFF, and themselves, 0 BFF. They figure talking to Cid is the most prudent thing to do. Cid formulates a plan, telling the light warriors to leave the orbs in the temple and go off and live their lives in seclusion. The battle with Chaos however has left the elements out of balance.

420 BFF: Cid arrives near Lefein and his orbs are lit for some reason. He talks with the light warriors of 2000 BFF as they explain what they’ve just been through in exact detail. Cid also does not want to alter the timeline, too drastically and realizes that if he now uses the orbs to go stop Garland then it will create a time loop, so he still helps Lefein becomes technologically advanced. With the orbs lit, the technological progression of Lefein is much faster, and employing the help of some dwarves, Cid has constructed a gigantic tower that reaches through to the core of the Earth. At 400 BFF he replicates the exact conditions of the time travel as relayed by the light warriors, not knowing where this will lead him. Lefein becomes the dominant power on Earth.

0 BFF – Garland A arrives near what was once his temple, but it looks very different and technologically advanced. He devises a way to be sent 2000 years into the past that does not require a human sacrifice, but still forgets to carry the 1. The 4 light warriors later arrive from 10000 AFF and  follow these odd instructions to travel into the past using the black orb to kill the fiends and garland to relay messages to Cid. They aren’t entirely sure why they are doing it, but something about the space time continuum requiring them to follow exact instructions makes them follow them exactly (Point V).

W-X Segment

Point W – 2000 BFF The light warriors follow their odd instructions exactly. Everything Up to 0 BFF is exactly the same as in the UV segment.

Sometime after 0 BFF: The Mysidian Order of Lefeinish Mages build a city over the temple of fiends. They call it Mysidia. Jorel of Mysidia figures out that the world is going to explode soon because the elements are out of balance.

The Mysidians figure out a way to bring balance to the Earth using a giant black orb and 4 smaller orbs they they have found in their town. They figure out that by cutting them into gemstone shapes they can more easily harness their power. The 4 orbs are cut into crystals. The Black Orb is cut into 4 smaller crystals.. these are known as the dark crystals.  The plan involves putting the crystals in strategic locations all over the Earth, with the dark crystals below the Earth. A contingent of dwarves promises to stay below ground and watch over these. The plan will have massive consequences for civilization as it will force most of the world into the dark ages again, and Lefein will be no more. Jorel convinces Mr. Damcyan of Gaia, Mr. Fabul of Pravoka, and Ms. Toroia of Onrac to guard over these while Mysidia will guard the Water Crystal.  The plan is invoked and the topography of the Earth is drastically altered to look like the world of FFIV. Old place names, with the exception of Mysidia are forgotten, while cities spring up around the crystals, and these are named after the original crystal guardian.

-1500 AFF: A farmer discovers some ancient seeds in a box buried on his farm. The box bears the name Gysahl (A Lefeinish farmer long since forgotten). The seeds grow into veggies, which the farmer names Gysahl Greens. Eventually people forget how the name Gysahl greens originated. Chocobos seem to like the plants very much and this leads to their wholesale domestication.

5000 AFF Cid arrives from 400 BFF Near Baron. The backstory of Final Fantasy IV occurs.

Sometime After 5000 AFF – *NOTE!* Kluya arrives in a secluded village somewhere and falls in love with Cecilia, and has 2 sons, Cecil and the man that will become Golbez. The Events of Final Fantasy IV (and the after years occur).

The gathering and removal of the Crystals (or whatever happened to the ones on Earth in FFIV) causes the elements to be out of balance, leading once again to the near destruction of Earth that changes the topography drastically.

10000 AFF: The 4 light warriors arrive on the moon with everyone still alive. Fusoya is troubled by their presence but they explain about Cid and their mission. He lets them continue with their mission.

The very distant future: The Lunarians locate Bob and tell him of his mission to travel back in time to the planet Phaeton to ensure their existence. They then solve the Earth’s pollution problems and everyone lives happily ever after. The end.
